Beberapa orang yang mengidap penyakit ini biasanya akan merasa perubahan hati pada saat musim berganti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dalam beberapa kasus, perubahan suasana hati ini dapat mempengaruhi kegiatan sehari-hari. Namun beberapa penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengidap SAD memproduksi <em>serotonin<\/em> yang lebih sedikit. Kimia otak inilah yang membantu kita mengatur suasana hati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penelitian tersebut juga menemukan bahwa sinar matahari membantu mempertahankan kadar <em>serotonin<\/em> normal. Karena itu, pengidap SAD mengalami penurunan SAD saat waktu siang hari lebih pendek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selain itu, orang yang mengidap SAD juga menghasilkan terlalu banyak <em>melatonin<\/em> yang berguna untuk mempertahankan siklus tidur normal. Kadar <em>melatonin<\/em> yang berlebih bisa meningkatkan rasa kantuk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perubahan kadar <em>serotonin<\/em> dan <em>melatonin<\/em> inilah yang mengganggu ritme harian normal para pengidap SAD. Akibatnya, perubahan musim bisa menyebabkan perubahan tidur, suasana hati, dan perilaku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kekurangan vitamin D dapat memperburuk masalah ini karena vitamin D dipercaya dapat meningkatkan aktivitas <em>serotonin<\/em>. Selain mengonsumsi vitamin D dengan pola makan, tubuh memproduksi vitamin D saat kulit terkena sinar matahari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besarnya pengaruh sinar matahari pada kondisi SAD ini menjadi alasan pengidap gangguan ini banyak yang berasal dari wilayah yang jauh dari garis khatulistiwa. Si penderita harus duduk di depan kotak cahaya dengan tingkat cahaya mencapai 10,000 lux (satuan intensitas cahaya) setiap hari selama 30-45 menit. Terapi ini dilakukan di pagi hari, pada saat musim gugur hingga musim semi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Terapi bicara<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Terapi perilaku kognitif ini bertujuan untuk membantu para pengidap SAD untuk mengubah pola pikir negatif selama terjadinya pergantian musim. Karena itu, terapi ini biasanya berlangsung selama enam minggu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walau terapi cahaya dan terapi bicara ini dapat membantu meringankan kondisi SAD, para peneliti menemukan bahwa dengan menjalani terapi cahaya, beberapa gejala tampaknya membaik sedikit lebih cepat. Namun efek positif dari terapi bicara justru bertahan lebih lama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Konsumsi obat anti depresan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Karena SAD, seperti jenis depresi lainnya, dikaitkan dengan gangguan aktivitas <em>serotonin<\/em>, obat antidepresan yang disebut <em>selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor<\/em> (SSRI) juga digunakan untuk mengobati SAD saat gejala muncul. Obat-obatan ini dapat meningkatkan <em>mood<\/em> pasien secara signifikan. SSRI yang umum digunakan termasuk <em>fluoxetine, citalopram, sertraline, paroxetine<\/em>, dan <em>escitalopram<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Konsumsi vitamin D<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pengidap SAD sering kali mengalami kekurangan vitamin D.
